Brake pads are part of the disc brake in your Toyota that create stopping friction with the rotor. Inside a brake caliper, a piston pushes a pair of pads, squeezing them against a rotating disc. Brake pads consist of a friction material attached to a steel backing plate. As the friction material rubs against the rotor, brake dust is released into the air. This is often caused by the rotor making contact with the backing plate.
