Brake pads are part of the disc brake in your Toyota that create stopping friction with the rotor. Inside a brake caliper, a piston pushes a pair of pads, squeezing them against a rotating disc. Brake pads consist of a friction material attached to a steel backing plate. As the friction material rubs against the rotor, brake dust is released into the air. This material becomes thin over time. A common complaint of owners with disc brakes is a scraping or grinding noise in their wheels. This is often caused by the rotor making contact with the backing plate.

How Long Brake Pads Last on a Toyota

Perform routine inspections on your brakes to know the status of the brake pads. A range of 30,000 to 60,000 miles is right about the time when pads wear out. Under normal driving conditions, that’s 2-3 years. If you’re used to slamming on your brakes or riding your brakes, then you’re likely on the shorter end of the range, whichever Toyota model you drive.

Can I Check My Brake Pads Without Removing the Tire?

You can look through the spokes of your Toyota’s wheels to estimate the remaining thickness of the brake pads. This is often possible with alloy wheels with enough space to have a clear view of the pads. If the material is about less than a quarter of an inch thick, then consider installing new brake pads.
