Spark plugs are electrical devices located at the top of the cylinder heads in your Toyota’s engine. In gas engines, each cylinder has one plug. Hence, a V8 engine has eight plugs, while an inline-six engine has six. Spark plugs receive upwards of 45,000 volts through the ignition coil. Pressing the ignition button or turning the key activates your car’s starter and causes a voltage transfer from the battery to the coil. The high voltage causes an electrical spark. The spark ignites the air-fuel mixture and starts a controlled combustion.

Why Is Replacing Spark Plugs So Expensive?

The high cost can be attributed to at least two factors. First is the rising price of precious metals such as platinum and palladium. Second is the labor cost to get the spark plugs replaced. Depending on your Toyota model, a complex engine design or layout can make it challenging to remove and install a spark plug. It can take as little as 30 minutes to replace a defective plug, but sometimes as much as two hours or more.

Can Spark Plugs Last 200,000 Miles?

Even the highest quality spark plugs last about 100,000 miles before issues pop up. For most engines, problems manifest after 30,000 miles. Refer to your owner’s manual to know the suggested interval for your vehicle model. Alternatively, send us your questions so we can provide recommendations.
